What is what the fuck is a kilometer?

A kilometer (km) is a unit of length in the metric system. It's equal to 1,000 meters. To put it in perspective:

  • Roughly equivalent to: 0.62 miles (or about 5/8ths of a mile).
  • Think of it as: A good brisk walk would take about 10-15 minutes to cover a kilometer. A short drive would be a couple of minutes.
  • Used for: Measuring longer distances, like the distance between cities, the length of a road, or the altitude of a mountain. Meters are better for shorter distances like the length of a room.

So, basically, a kilometer is a convenient way to measure distances that are longer than what you'd measure in meters.
